Marilyn Chambers (born Marilyn Ann Briggs, April 22, 1952, in Westport, Connecticut, USA) is a former American pornographic actress and stripteaser perhaps best known for her 1972 hardcore debut Behind the Green Door.
Marilyn Chambers is a true pioneer of modern adult film. Born to a conservative family in Rhode Island, Marilyn Briggs had visions of stardom early in childhood. Unlike her contemporaries or successors, Marilyn bounced between the X-rated and mainstream world with relative ease, making hers the most recognized name associated with adult film. Marilyn’s career continues to impress fans after more than a quarter of a century. Her ceaseless popularity can be attributed to her gorgeous but natural appearance, topped off by a vibrant personality and an unparalleled passion for her work.
Early life
According to John Hubner's book Bottom Feeders, (1994), Chambers came from a middle-class household. Her father was in advertising and her mother was a nurse. She was the youngest of three children and was always trying to get her parents' attention. Her father discouraged her when she told him she wanted to be a model, citing brutal competition. Chambers landed some modeling gigs in New York, but she moved to California to get more work. There, she landed a small role in the Barbra Streisand starrer The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), where she was credited as Evelyn Lang. Her parents still weren't impressed and urged her to come home. Instead, Chambers kept auditioning but didn't land anything other than a low-budget film Together(1971) in which she appeared nude. Depressed, she left Los Angeles and moved to San Francisco where she held several jobs, including work as a topless model and a bottomless dancer. She also married a hippie named Doug. Adult film career
Marilyn had seen an advertisement for a casting call. She rushed over to the audition only to find out that it was for a porno film. She was about to walk out the door when the Mitchell brothers stopped her, because she resembled Cybill Shepherd, feeling that a wholesome blond actress is needed for their film. They didn't know that earlier, she had modeled as the cover girl on the Ivory Snow soap box, where she posed holding the baby. (According to some urban legends, she was the baby; this turned out to be false, as was the claim that the baby was Brooke Shields.) The product's manufacturer, Procter & Gamble quickly dropped her after it discovered her double life as an adult film actress. For Behind the Green Door, Chambers, who was ambivalent about starring in the film, asked the film's producers, the Mitchell brothers, Artie and Jim, a $25,000 salary and a percentage of the gross, never expecting that they would agree. After filming concluded, she dropped the Ivory Snow bombshell, which resulted in her being billed as the "99 and 44/100% pure" girl.
In Behind the Green Door, Chambers engaged in explicit interracial sex with the very well-endowed African-American actor Johnny Keyes. One scene lasted for over 45 minutes; at the conclusion of it, she fainted. The industry and viewing public were shocked; a white woman having sex with a black man was then still taboo. (Chambers parents refused to talk to her for several years after the film's release, but they eventually reconciled.) In later movies with John Holmes, who was noted for his extremely large penis, Chambers "talk[ed] dirty" to him off-camera to produce the desired effect: fully excited arousal. Eventually, mainstream films noticed Chambers, and in 1977, she got a part in David Cronenberg's Rabid. (1977). However, her adult film career made Hollywood studios nervous, so she never made the big films that she had hoped she would get.
She was noted for her performance enthusiasm, for deep throat, anal, lesbian, interracial, extreme bukkake, and double or triple penetration scenes. She was one of the first female stars to shave her pubic area, a practice now routine in preparation for a porn film. Chambers continues to appear in porn films for such companies as Naughty America and MILF Hunter, happily cashing in on the lucrative MILF market. Later in her career, Marilyn had a series of breast enhancements taking her from a B-cup to at least a D. She was also one of the first porn actresses to have her genitals pierced; she was photographed with a one-inch gold ring in her right inner labia.
Her first marriage ended after Behind the Green Door was released. During her 1975-1985 marriage to porn producer/director/manager, Chuck Traynor, Chambers continued in mainstream and porn films. After that marriage ended, Chambers married for the third time to truckdriver Tom Taylor. She gave birth to their daughter, McKenna Marie Taylor, in 1991. Her third marriage also ended in divorce. Chambers has admitted to writer John Hubner and other interviewers that she has battled drug and alcohol addiction.
Other work
* Marilyn Chambers also had some chart success with the Disco single "Benihana" in 1976, produced by Michael Zager on the Roulette Records label. In the 2004 United States presidential election, Marilyn Chambers ran for Vice President on the Personal Choice Party ticket, a quasi-libertarian party. She received a total of 946 votes.
